Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) FAQs

What is radiofrequency ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive varicose vein treatment procedure that uses electricity to heat the veins which eventually collapse and seal off completely.
What is the difference between RF ablation and Laser?
During the procedure of radiofrequency ablation, a catheter is inserted into the vein. The catheter sends off heat energy which causes the vein to shrink. This basically means that the vein closes. Since the vein closes, it no longer carries blood, and eventually the body will absorb the vein. The laser filament uses a heating element instead. Both are designed to target the vein wall.
Who are the best candidates for a Radiofrequency Ablation?
Patients with varicose veins that cause pain, swelling, cramping or other forms of discomfort.
How does the procedure work?
An ultrasound is used to guide procedure. The leg is injected with a local anesthetic, and a small needle punctures the vein. A catheter will be inserted into the vein and more numbing medication will be injected around the vein. Once the numbing medication is placed around the catheter and vein, the catheter will slowly be pulled back. During the time the catheter generates heat, the vein is closed off.
Does radiofrequency ablation hurt?
Most patients report feeling little, if any, pain during the ablation procedure.
What are the expected results after I get a radiofrequency ablation?
Patients can often notice a dramatic improvement in the way their legs feel within a few days. The varicose veins will take some time to fully disappear, depending on how severe they are bulging from your skin and how long you have left them untreated.
Does insurance cover this?
Yes, this procedure is covered by insurance.
What is the recovery like?
You may resume normal activities immediately. If bruising occurs, it should improve in 1 to 2 weeks.

Sclerotherapy Treatment

OVERVIEW

Sclerotherapy is a highly effective treatment when it comes to improving the cosmetic appearance of varicose and spider veins. In addition, this procedure can often reduce related symptoms such as aching, swelling, etc. Sclerotherapy is often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, causing the blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and gradually fades.
At Montville Medspa & Pain Center, our highly regarded vein specialist, Dr. Donna D'Alessio carries out sclerotherapy. Dr. D'Alessio who has carried out 10,000+ leg procedures will meet with you during a complimentary consultation to determine if this treatment is right for you. You can feel confident in his care as he is highly regarded by patients for his high level of patient care.
Note, sclerotherapy is often covered by insurance. Most patients require 2-4 treatments for optimum results.

Sclerotherapy FAQs

What can I expect during sclerotherapy?
During the procedure, you’ll lay down on your back with your legs slightly elevated. After cleansing the area to be treated with alcohol, Dr. D'Alessio will use a fine needle to slowly insert a solution into the appropriate vein. The liquid solution works by irritating the lining of the vein which then causing it to swell shut and block the flow of blood.
Does sclerotherapy hurt?
In general, it is a painless procedure.
What are the expected results?
After sclerotherapy, treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take six weeks to a month or more to see the full results. In some instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed. Conservatively, there is about a 50-75% improvement each time, most patients require 2-4 treatments for full results.
Does insurance cover the treatment?
Insurance coverage for sclerotherapy varies. If your varicose veins are causing medical problems such as swelling or pain, then your insurance may offer reimbursement. If you are pursuing sclerotherapy for cosmetic purposes only, your insurance carrier most likely will not cover the procedure.
What is the recovery like?
Patients should wear compression stocking for three days following the procedure. A follow-up visit within two weeks to enable the evacuation of blood clots in larger veins can improve the prognosis and the appearance.

VenaSeal™ Treatment

OVERVIEW
One of the newest options for patients seeking varicose vein treatment is VenaSeal™. At Montville Medspa & Pain Center, we are proud to offer this revolutionary treatment for varicose veins carried out by our board-certified plastic Montville vein specialist, Dr. Donna D'Alessio, who has carried out 10,000+ leg procedures.
VenaSeal is totally different than other nonsurgical and surgical methods for resolution of enlarged veins. It uses a specialized “glue” that seals the “leaky veins” and patients can go back to work the next day. Also, it is the only vein procedure that does not need to have compression stockings worn after being performed.
How it works: The first step for patients receiving VenaSeal™ for their varicose veins is a thorough evaluation of the leg vessels which is performed by our board-certified vein specialist Dr. D'Alessio. Go here to read more about Dr. D'Alessio. The entry site is chosen, and the area treated with local anesthetic to ensure minimal discomfort. A tiny puncture is made in the skin, through which the VenaSeal™ device may be inserted. The FDA-approved adhesive is then delivered along the entire length of the targeted vein, to guarantee complete closure. After only 30 minutes, the average VenaSeal™ procedure is completed, and patients can resume their normal daily activities with only minimal recovery time.

Benefits of VenaSeal™ for
Varicose Veins with Dr. D'Alessio:

FDA-approved
Brief procedure– about 30 minutes
Only one needle stick.
Does not heat the vein.
Tumescent anesthesia is not needed.
No downtime.

VenaSeal™ FAQs

What is VenaSeal and how can it help me?
VenaSeal is a minimally invasive procedure in which a catheter is placed into the vein and VenaSeal medical glue is injected to seal off the vein. This procedure allows for blood to find a different path instead of through the faulty vein.
Who are the best candidates for this procedure?
The best candidates for this procedure are patients who have symptoms like pain, cramping, swelling, burning, itchy sensation, or heaviness in their legs. Patients who present with visible spider or varicose veins may have underlying vein disease which would qualify for VenaSeal.
Describe the VenaSeal procedure and how is it performed?
During VenaSeal anesthesia is applied to numb the area of the procedure site. A small incision is made on the leg and a small catheter is then inserted into the varicose vein that has venous insufficiency. Using a medical adhesive solution, the vein is sealed off. This procedure is minimally invasive and has a quick recovery time.
Does the VenaSeal procedure hurt? Can I go back to work soon?
There is minimal discomfort with this procedure. An anesthetic is used on the leg of the patient in order to numb the inside of the leg so the patient has no pain. Patients can walk and return to their normal activities within the same day.
What are the expected results for VenaSeal?
Patients typically have significant improvement with their treatment. Since this is such a unique procedure, if a patient has multiple veins that need to be treated there’s the ability to treat more than one vein in the same leg safely and with minimal patient discomfort.
Does insurance cover the treatment?
It depends since VenaSeal is a relatively new treatment.
What is the recovery like for VenaSeal?
VenaSeal reduces discomfort and recovery time since it is the latest in vein removal technology. No compression garments are needed.

Compression Therapy

OVERVIEW

Compression stockings (or socks) are a special kind of elastic hosiery that supports healthy blood circulation and helps prevent a variety of health conditions, including spider veins, varicose veins, and CVI (chronic venous insufficiency)

The pressure that these stockings put on your ankles and legs compresses the surface arteries and veins, helping the vein valves to function properly and blood to flow back to your heart without obstructions.

If you’ve already developed a vein-related condition, compression stockings can help alleviate symptoms such as:
swollen ankles

  • heavy or aching legs
  • fatigue and pain
  • restless legs
  • night cramps

Our board-certified vein specialist, Dr. Donna D'Alessio, recommends 30mm Hg compression stockings when it comes to compression therapy for varicose veins and spider veins.

However, it is important to note that compression stockings CAN NOT reverse existing venous disease nor can they improve the cosmetic appearance of varicose veins or spider veins. If you are seeking to improve the appearance of your legs or to find relief from symptoms related to chronic venous insufficiency, our Montville vein specialist, Dr. D'Alessio, can help. In a complimentary consultation, he will work to discover the best treatment to correct your situation. Read more about Dr. Donna D'Alessio.

Compression Therapy FAQs

What is compression therapy?
Compression therapy is a technique used to increase the blood flow activity in the lower limbs through strengthening vein support. The stockings stretch out vein walls to improve overall circulation, which then reduces swelling.
Who can benefit from compression therapy?
Patients with spider veins, varicose veins or CVI.
Is compression therapy painful?
Compression therapy does not hurt. Compression stockings are sometimes uncomfortable because they are meant to be very tight, but they do not typically make the patient feel pain.
What can be expected?
The expected results for a patient using compression stockings are lighter feeling legs. Sometimes patients experience less varicose veins and better coloration on their skin from the compression stockings. Patients often feel less cramping and experience less swelling.
Does insurance cover the treatment?
Patients who undergo many vein procedures such as RF ablation are usually given compression stockings covered by their insurance.
Any there any side effects?
Patients sometimes can experience some discomfort from the tightness of the stocking that they are not used too.
